The Metal
Services Story

Our Founder, Dennis Heimerman, came to Metal Services by a roundabout route and so picked up a diverse skillset along the way. Before starting a shop as a metal fabricator, he worked as a material handler, Class A welder at a major manufacturing company, a car salesman, a glass installer and again as a welder in a smaller manufacturing firm where he also learned to operate a wide variety of metal working equipment.

During this time he became aware that he needed to do something on his own and with that thought in mind, he took a job at a large farm operation where the hours where unlimited. He spent the next three years putting together enough equity in equipment to borrow money for what he still needed and opened Metal Services of Blooming Prairie in 1984.

That has meant working closely with customers to understand their current and future needs. It meant adding services like tube bending and millwright work to meet their needs. It has meant mastering new machines and learning new skills, day in and day out, to make sure that Metal Services remains the go-to shop for everyone in the community.

But the reason we have succeeded while growing so dramatically is that every step of the way we have retained the ethos only a family-run business makes possible. None of that would have been possible without the help of Carol Heimerman who managed the bookkeeping while working a full time job of her own. She made sure that bills were paid at the company and at home. That spirit of community-minded service has been incorporated into a new generation of business ingenuity and entrepreneurship.
